R0yalty Free - y0u'll see this term 0ften. What it means is that y0u pay a 0ne time fee f0r an image and y0u can use it f0r as many times as y0u want f0r as l0ng as y0u wish. It is a great way t0 get inexpensive ph0t0s. N0w if y0u are c0ncerned that y0ur c0mpetit0r w0uld 0r c0uld use the same image as y0u, ph0t0graphers and agencies can c0ntinue t0 sell the image after y0u purchase it, then y0u need:
Rights Managed - this 0ne is next term y0u'll see. This means that y0u pay a fee f0r the image based 0n h0w, where, h0w l0ng, and h0w many pe0ple will see the image. This 0ne will c0st y0u a l0t m0re in m0st cases. This is w0rth it if y0u d0 n0t want y0ur c0mpetit0r using the same image f0r the same purp0se. Usually the st0ck agency 0r ph0t0grapher als0 agree n0t t0 sell the image t0 0thers in y0ur field f0r the time that y0u are using the image. S0 y0u can see why this 0pti0n pr0tects y0ur use 0f the image but y0u'll als0 pay much m0re f0r this pr0tecti0n. Remember t00 that, at s0me p0int, y0u decided t0 disc0ntinue using/paying f0r the image the agency 0r ph0t0grapher can then sell the image t0 s0me0ne else, even s0me0ne in y0ur field.
Flat Rate - this term isn't quite at c0mm0n but it is similar t0 r0yalty free. Usually this means that y0u pay a 0ne time fee f0r an image, but it can 0nly be used f0r 0ne purp0se by 0ne pers0n. Pricing will be higher than r0yalty free but less than rights managed.
C0pyright - even with r0yalty free y0u are still 0nly purchasing the right t0 use an image n0t the image itself. All images are pr0perty 0f the agency 0r ph0t0grapher wh0 0wns them. H0w d0 y0u kn0w wh0 0wns them, there is usually a ? symb0l with date and name 0f the pers0n 0r agency wh0 0wns the image. N0 matter what y0u paid f0r the image y0u are NOT the 0wner 0f the image. This means y0u cann0t rem0ve the c0pyright inf0rmati0n, alter the ph0t0, use it as part 0f a l0g0 that y0u 0wn a c0pyright, 0r resale the image as y0ur 0wn.
These terms will get y0u started but remember there can be differences in these definiti0ns fr0m agency t0 agency and ph0t0grapher t0 ph0t0grapher. Every agency and ph0t0grapher selling st0ck images sh0uld have a legal 0r license page t0 explain these terms and any 0thers that they use, if they d0n't y0u may want t0 m0ve 0nt0 an0ther site.
